The Works of Mercy: “I Was Thirsty” and Other Acts of Compassion Panel #4940
This colorful triptych narrates the spiritual mandate of compassion through six corporal works of mercy, drawing on Matthew 25. The top rows illustrate “I was hungry and you gave me food,” “I was thirsty and you gave me drink,” and “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” The middle scenes portray acts of clothing the naked and visiting the sick, each figure captured in tender exchange. The final panel depicts “I was in prison and you came to me,” where a compassionate visitor offers solace to the shackled. Above, angels hold scrolls with scripture, while ornate Gothic tracery frames the windows in celestial reds and golds. These panels remind viewers that service to humanity is service to Christ Himself.
A religious window like this would make a good addition to a house of worship or a hospital chapel.
